06-Mar-2012 AMRF SUPPORTS INNOVATIVE YOU TUBE OUTREACH ACTIVITY
AMRF has joined forces with the University of Auckland, the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery and the UK charity Understanding Animal Research to support an Auckland scientist in an innovative You Tube outreach experiment. Dr Siouxsie Wiles, a microbiologist and bioluminescence enthusiast at the University of Auckland, has teamed up with the graphic artist Luke Harris and his team, to make a series of short animations about bioluminescent creatures (think glow worms and fireflies) and how their light can be used in diverse areas of science. The first animation, Meet the Lampyridae, describes how and why fireflies glow and how bioluminescence is being used in Siouxsie's research into nasty bacteria, while the second, From Fireflies to Space Invaders, shows how fireflies are being used by NASA to search for extraterrestrial life. The animations are up on You Tube and have had over 7,500 views so far.
